Laura & Hector
La Graciosa, Canary Islands
In the island of La Graciosa I heard for the first time the word “calima”.
Calima is a sand and dust storm, the wind changes direction and bring sand particles over to the Canaries from the Sahara. The sky looks foggy but it’s actually sand. The sand in the air reduces visibility, the sky often looks hazy and the temperatures are well up, mainly occurs in the winter months.
During a Calima the breeze often still provides some relief.
